Credit Cards - How to apply

Applying for a Credit Card is a relatively simple process. You can apply for most credit cards in a number of ways - online, over the telephone or by filling out a paper application.

Before you start applying it's worth getting a few pieces of your personal information to hand. No two applications are the same but generally speaking you will need to give the credit card company the following information.

  • Your full name and/or maiden names.
  • Your address details for the last 3 years.
  • Your employment details or status.
  • Address of current employer (if any).
  • Residential status - i.e. do you rent or own a home.
  • Contact telephone number.
  • Basic details of other credit cards or personal loans.
  • Bank information account and the time as a customer with the bank.

Most credit card applications take around 5 minutes to complete, and it speeds up the process to have the above information to hand. Once you've filled in the application the credit card company will decide to either approve your or reject your application.

There are many reasons why credit card applications are rejected, often it's because the application is missing vital information. Some credit card companies will phone or contact you in an effort to fill in the missing information others may simply reject the application. Be careful when filling in the applications, double check your address details, bank details and give as much information as you can on the form.
